Positano, Perfectly Planned: A Luxury Guide to the Amalfi Coast

Positano is the Amalfi Coast at its most vibrant. Cascading pastel buildings spill down dramatic cliffs toward the sea, ferries glide in and out of the harbor, and the town hums with an energy that feels both glamorous and effortless. Compared to Amalfi or Sorrento, Positano offers a livelier rhythm — visually striking, socially engaging, and endlessly atmospheric.
For one of my recent clients traveling with teenagers, Positano proved to be the ideal choice. It offered more movement and excitement than Amalfi, while feeling more immersive and dynamic than Sorrento. This is the Amalfi Coast for travelers who want to experience the destination — not simply observe it.
Getting to Positano: A Seamless Arrival Matters

Most travelers arrive via Naples, continuing onward by private car service or ferry, depending on comfort, timing, and preference.
A private car transfer from Naples takes approximately 1.5–2 hours, offering a direct arrival (though the coastal roads are famously winding).
Ferries operate from Naples or via Sorrento, with the Sorrento–Positano ferry taking 40–60 minutes and offering spectacular coastal views.
When I plan Positano for clients, I often recommend a car service one way and a ferry the other, balancing efficiency with experience.
It’s also important to know that arrival doesn’t end at the ferry dock. Positano is built vertically into the cliffs, with steep paths and uneven streets. Most guests arrange a local taxi or porter service from the port to their hotel — especially for hillside properties. When handled properly, this final transition feels smooth and effortless, exactly as a luxury arrival should.
Where to Stay in Positano: Signature Luxury Hotels
In Positano, the hotel you choose defines how the entire experience feels. Some properties offer walkable access to ferries and town life, while others trade convenience for privacy, panoramic views, and tranquility.

Le Sirenuse
Iconic · Central · Romantic
Positano’s most celebrated address, Le Sirenuse is a cliffside palazzo known for candlelit terraces, refined service, and one of the most coveted dining rooms on the coast. Its central location allows guests to stroll town effortlessly and access ferries with ease.

Il San Pietro di Positano
Secluded · Ultra-Luxury · Private Beach
Set in Laurito Bay, Il San Pietro offers a completely different experience — quiet, refined, and deeply private. With its own beach, Michelin-level dining, and complimentary shuttle into town, it feels like a private retreat suspended above the sea.

More villa than hotel, Villa TreVille feels like a private Mediterranean residence with curated interiors, lush gardens, and a sense of quiet glamour — close to Positano, yet removed from the crowds.

Covo dei Saraceni
Beachfront · Convenient · Effortless
Located directly on Spiaggia Grande, this hotel offers one of Positano’s most convenient luxury locations — guests can step off the ferry and into the hotel.

Dining in Positano: Luxury Experiences Worth Planning Around
Dining in Positano is about more than food — it’s about setting, access, and timing. Many of the most memorable meals require advance reservations, thoughtful pacing, or even a boat ride. Earlier seatings (around 6–7pm) tend to be calmer and more relaxed during peak season.
Signature Luxury Dining Experiences

Boat-Only Access · Barefoot Luxury
Reachable only by water, Da Adolfo is one of the Amalfi Coast’s most iconic dining experiences. Guests arrive by boat, dine with their feet in the sand, and often swim before or after lunch. Casual, joyful, and unforgettable.

When to Plan Positano
Summer is peak season on the Amalfi Coast. For summer travel, I recommend planning at least four months in advance — and ideally six months or more.
This ensures:
You stay where you want
Dine where you want
Experience the coast without compromise
Luxury in Positano is about choice — and choice comes from planning early.
The Luxury of Not Having to Think About It
Positano is at its best when every detail is handled before you arrive — the right hotel in the right location, the right reservations secured, and the right experiences timed perfectly.
I design Amalfi Coast itineraries for travelers who want to know they won’t miss a thing — without ever feeling rushed, overwhelmed, or concerned about the details.
If Positano is on your horizon and you’d like it planned effortlessly, I’d be delighted to design it for you.
