Positano is the Amalfi Coast at its most vibrant. Cascading pastel buildings spill down dramatic cliffs toward the sea, ferries glide in and out of the harbor, and the town hums with an energy that feels both glamorous and effortless. Compared to Amalfi or Sorrento, Positano offers a livelier rhythm — visually striking, socially engaging, and endlessly atmospheric.
For one of my recent clients traveling with teenagers, Positano proved to be the ideal choice. It offered more movement and excitement than Amalfi, while feeling more immersive and dynamic than Sorrento. This is the Amalfi Coast for travelers who want to experience the destination — not simply observe it.
Getting to Positano: A Seamless Arrival Matters
Most travelers arrive via Naples, continuing onward by private car service or ferry, depending on comfort, timing, and preference.
A private car transfer from Naples takes approximately 1.5–2 hours, offering a direct arrival (though the coastal roads are famously winding).
Ferries operate from Naples or via Sorrento, with the Sorrento–Positano ferry taking 40–60 minutes and offering spectacular coastal views.
When I plan Positano for clients, I often recommend a car service one way and a ferry the other, balancing efficiency with experience.
It’s also important to know that arrival doesn’t end at the ferry dock. Positano is built vertically into the cliffs, with steep paths and uneven streets. Most guests arrange a local taxi or porter service from the port to their hotel — especially for hillside properties. When handled properly, this final transition feels smooth and effortless, exactly as a luxury arrival should.

Dining in Positano is about more than food — it’s about setting, access, and timing. Many of the most memorable meals require advance reservations, thoughtful pacing, or even a boat ride. Earlier seatings (around 6–7pm) tend to be calmer and more relaxed during peak season.
